Measuring Real-time Gene Expression

A study in BMC Biotechnology correlates real-time gene expression with movement and behavior for the first time. The proof-of-concept experiment in fruit flies opens a new door for the study of genes' influence on behavior. The authors, from the University of Southern California and Cambridge University, tagged genes with a harmless molecule known as Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP). When a gene was active, the flies gave off a fluorescent glow. A camera fitted with a special filter detected the glow, whose intensity was then measured automatically. At the same time, a multiple-camera system designed by first author and USC graduate student Dhruv Grover tracked the movement of each fly in three dimensions. The result: an exact picture of gene activity at every point and time of a fly's life. DBT-JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (DBT-JRF) IN BIOTECHNOLOGY (2011-12) (Coordinated by University of Pune) Examination Date–17th April.

GENERAL
Applications are invited from Indian nationals for the award of DBT-Junior Research Fellowship (DBTJRF) for pursuing research in frontier areas of Biotechnology and Applied Biology. JRFs will be selected according to merit under two categories: Category A and B.
Category A fellowship (Top 100 in number) are tenable in any University/Institute in India where the students can register for Ph.D.

Qualification and Experience :
M.Sc. with Ph.D in Entomology with 10-15 years experience ( at least 5 years in supervisory position).
Exposure to research in Biological Control will be preferred.
Publications in peer reviewed journal with high impact value are desirable.
Should have the ability for independent thinking to lead an experienced group of Scientists.
Scale : PB-4: Pay Band Rs.37,400-Rs.67,000+Grade Pay Rs:8,700/-
Age : Around 45 years.
Qualification and age may be relaxed in case of highly deserving candidates with good track record.
